PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Some difficulties arose in the organization of the forecast ISEC Conference, to be held in Graz, led to the proposal of the University of Rome “La Sapienza” to hold the 11th ISEC in its Faculty of Engineering, even with a very short time remaining to organize it. The feeling of the International Stirling Engine Council was that “the show must go on”…and the decision was taken unanimously. So here we are, ready to do our best in order to make the 11th ISEC a success.

Commercial applications of Stirling engines in the energy market have been the goal of extensive research efforts within the “Stirling engine community”. The unique capacity of Stirling engines to operate with unconventional fuels makes them particularly suitable for producing electricity from new primary energy sources. Moreover, Stirling engines are a promising option for combined heat and power production with biomass fuels. The need to increase the use of renewable energy sources has led to policy actions promoting their use in many countries.

In Italy the modern interest in Stirling engines has a tradition of decades and a renewed attention is paid to some particular fields of application. For example, the University of Rome, in collaboration with ENEA, is implementing a project aimed at installing small Stirling power units in the Italian base located in the Antarctic Region; moreover, many Administrations of protected natural areas are evaluating the opportunity of using Stirling engines fed with biomass or other renewable energy sources in order to ensure a more sustainable local energy use in Natural Parks and Small Islands.

In Europe there is a strong interest in new and renewable energies and in the reduction of greenhouses gasses, leading to new requirements and the EU Directive on Electricity Production from Renewable Energy: a certain amount of electricity must be produced from biomass, geothermal energy, wind, mini-hydro or solar energy by each electricity Company. With this background, the development of Stirling engines for combined heat and power production using renewable fuels appears to be promising in decentralized co-generation and tri-generation (heat, cold and electricity).

But many and many new opportunities are on the way, heat pump applications and cryocoolers as first.

To reflect this expectation the motto for the 11th International Stirling Engine Conference has been chosen: “How to make a business out of Stirling engines today?”

(Vincenzo Naso, President of the ISEC)
